A Google Analytics 4 course should teach you to measure what visitors do on a site: events, key events, traffic sources, reports and links to Search Console and Google Ads. The goal is not to read charts but to decide what to change next. Practise on a real site and start with Google’s free training.

What GA4 does
Google Analytics 4 is Google’s analytics tool for websites and apps. It records what people do as events, such as page views, clicks and form submissions, and groups them into reports. That tells you where visitors come from, what they do and which actions lead to enquiries or sales.
What to learn
- Events and key events: what is tracked, and how to mark the actions that matter, such as a lead form submission.
- Traffic sources: organic search, paid, social, email and direct, and how campaign tags (UTMs) label them.
- Standard reports: acquisition, engagement and pages, and how to read them.
- Explorations and audiences: deeper analysis and groups of visitors.
- Connections: linking Search Console and Google Ads so the data meets in one place.
- Tag Manager and dashboards: adding tracking without editing code, and sharing results in a clear report.
A first-week plan
Why it matters for marketers
Without measurement, you cannot tell whether SEO, ads or social posts are working. Analytics is what turns activity into decisions. It sits underneath our performance marketing guide, our Google Ads guide and our SEO guide.
Common beginner mistakes
- Not marking any key event, so reports cannot show which sources produce leads.
- Sharing links without UTM tags, so campaign traffic is lumped together.
- Counting your own visits and test form submissions as real traffic.
- Looking at traffic only and never at what visitors did next.
- Changing settings with no note of what you changed and when.
Free and paid ways to learn
Google offers free GA4 training on Skillshop, and several platforms have free introductions that take an hour or two. That is a good way to learn the screens. A course adds practice on a live site, feedback on your setup and help turning data into recommendations. Our Google Analytics course works that way.
A practice project
Set up GA4 on a small site, mark one key event, tag two campaigns and write a one-page report. Doing it once on a real site teaches more than watching ten videos.
FAQ
Is Google Analytics 4 free?
Yes, the standard version is free. Larger businesses can pay for an enterprise version.
Do I need to code to learn GA4?
No. You can set up and read GA4 without coding. Tag Manager helps you add tracking without editing the site, and basic HTML helps you understand what you are tracking.
How long does it take to learn GA4?
You can learn the screens in a few days. Becoming confident with tracking, key events and reports on a real site takes a few weeks of practice.
What is a key event?
A key event is an action you mark as important to the business, such as a form submission or a purchase, so reports can show which sources produce it.
Is there a free Google certification for GA4?
Google Skillshop offers free Analytics training with an assessment. Check the current course list there.
