A Google Ads course should teach you to run search campaigns that bring enquiries at a cost the business can afford: keyword intent, ad copy, conversion tracking, budgets and reports. Look for hands-on practice with a real account, and use Google’s free certification to prove the basics.

What Google Ads does
Google Ads lets a business show ads when people search for something, watch videos or browse the web. For most local businesses and training institutes, search campaigns are the best place to start, because the person is already looking for what you offer.
Skills a good course teaches
- Keyword intent: telling apart people who want to buy from people who only want to read.
- Match types and negatives: controlling which searches trigger your ad and blocking the wasteful ones.
- Ad copy and landing pages: matching the promise in the ad to the page that follows.
- Conversion tracking: counting calls, forms and WhatsApp clicks so you know what works.
- Budgets and bidding: deciding how much to spend and when to let automation help.
- Reporting: reading the numbers and deciding what to change.
How a campaign is built
Tracking comes before spending. Without it, you cannot tell which clicks became customers.
Practising with real money, safely
Reading about ads is not the same as running them. A good course lets you work on a real account with a small, agreed budget, with a mentor checking your settings before anything goes live. Mistakes then cost little and teach a lot.
Never take a course that asks you to spend your own large budget on day one, or one that promises guaranteed leads. Results depend on the offer, the page and the market.
Google Ads certification (free)
Google Ads certification is free to take. Google offers training and certifications for Google Ads and Analytics through Skillshop, including Search, Display, Video and Shopping topics. They are a useful way to prove the basics, and they work best alongside a portfolio of campaigns you have actually managed.
Where AI helps
AI can draft ad variations, group keywords and summarise reports. Google Ads itself also uses automation for bidding and campaign types. You still need to understand the settings, so you can check what the automation is doing and step in when it drifts.
What to ask before you enrol
- Will I work on a real account, and who reviews my work?
- How many learners are in a batch?
- Do I learn conversion tracking, not just ad creation?
- What support do I get after the course ends?
FAQ

Do I need a big budget to practise?
No. A small, agreed budget with mentor review is enough to learn the full workflow.
Is the Google Ads certification free?
Google offers free training and certification through Skillshop. Check the Skillshop site for the current list.
Can I run ads for my own business after the course?
Yes, if the course covered tracking and optimisation. Start small, measure properly and scale only what works.
