SEO helps your pages rank in search results. AEO and GEO aim to get your content used or cited in direct answers and AI-generated responses. Google says no special optimization is needed for its AI features, so the sound plan is strong SEO with clear, well-structured, trustworthy pages.

The short version

Three terms get mixed up. SEO is the established practice of making a site findable in search. AEO and GEO describe making content easy for answer engines and AI tools to use. They overlap a lot, and the work behind them is mostly the same good habits.

What is SEO

Search engine optimization improves how your pages appear in search results. It covers technical health, helpful content, keyword intent and trust. Our SEO course guide lists what to learn.

What is AEO

AEO is most often read as answer engine optimization: shaping content so it can be the direct answer to a question, as in featured snippets, voice assistants and AI answers. Some writers use AEO to mean AI engine optimization instead, so check which meaning someone intends.

What is GEO

GEO means generative engine optimization. The term comes from a research paper first submitted in November 2023 by researchers from Princeton, Georgia Tech, the Allen Institute for AI and IIT Delhi. It is about improving the chance that a generative engine such as ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity cites or recommends your content.

What Google says

Google’s guidance on AI features says there are no extra requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special optimizations are necessary. A page needs to be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet. Google also says you do not need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special markup. It points back to the basics: allow crawling, use internal links, give a good page experience, keep key content as text and make sure structured data matches what is on the page. Traffic from these features appears in the Search Console Performance report under the Web search type.

Learning it properly

Because AI search changes quickly, learn the fundamentals first and test ideas on real pages. Our AEO and GEO course is built around that approach: practise on live pages and measure what changes.

FAQ

Is GEO different from SEO?

They overlap heavily. GEO focuses on being cited in AI-generated answers, while SEO focuses on ranking in search results. The same fundamentals support both.

Does Google say I need GEO or AEO?

Google’s guidance says no special optimization is needed for AI Overviews or AI Mode, and points to standard SEO best practices.

Do I need an llms.txt file?

Google says you do not need new machine-readable or AI text files to appear in its AI features. Adding one is optional, and we would not expect it to change rankings.

Is SEO dead because of AI search?

No. People still search, and AI answers draw on pages that are clear, useful and trusted. The fundamentals still matter.

How do I check if AI search sends me traffic?

Google says traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode is counted in the Search Console Performance report. Other AI tools may appear as referrals in your analytics.
